Town Hall: Health Disparities in our Community
April 16, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
From Councilmember Herb Wesson:
As this crisis has unfolded, we’re seeing evidence of what many of us have experienced first-hand for too long: that our healthcare system is inadequate and stacked against working-class communities and communities of color.
Across the country, we’ve been seeing reports of Black Americans with lower rates of testing and higher death rates than the general population. With less access to quality healthcare on average, it’s no surprise that this virus, which we all know can spread without any symptoms, is hitting communities of color the hardest. This crisis is making one thing abundantly clear: It’s time we start treating systemic racism like the public health crisis it is.
That’s why on Thursday, I’ll be joining with some of my elected colleagues and public health experts from across the county to host a virtual town hall on health disparities in our community. We’ll talk about what’s gotten us here, what we can do about it now, and how we can do better in the future.
