SUMMARY:Safe Sidewalk LA Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The City of Los Angeles (City) has prepared a Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) to evaluate the potential environmental effects of the proposed Sidewalk Repair Program (proposed Project) that addresses the manner in which sidewalk repair projects are undertaken pursuant to the City’s obligations under the Willits Settlement Agreement (Settlement). The City is requesting input on the Draft EIR from public agencies\, residents\, and other interested project stakeholders. \nPROJECT DESCRIPTION: Under the proposed Project\, the City would adopt a new uncodified ordinance to revise the way sidewalk repairs undertaken pursuant to the Settlement are reviewed and approved\, with a primary goal of streamlining the Settlement implementation process.\nThe key components of the ordinance include: \n• A ministerial approval process to enable sidewalk repair projects falling within certain specified parameters to proceed upon approval by the City Engineer or a designee\, without undergoing further environmental review under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA);\n• A streamlined discretionary approval process by the City Engineer or a designee for sidewalk repair projects falling outside the specific parameters for a ministerial sidewalk repair approval;\n• A revised Street Tree Retention\, Removal and Replacement Policy establishing a 2:1 street tree replacement to removal ratio requirement for years 1-10\, 3:1 for years 11-21\, and 2:1 for years 22-30\, and;\n• Mandatory Project Design Features (PDFs) generally consisting of regulatory compliance measures and standard construction conditions and procedures. \nHOW DO I GET INVOLVED? \nThe Draft EIR Public Review and Comment Period begins December 26th\, 2019 until February 24\, 2020. Options for providing comments during the Draft EIR Public Review and Comment Period include the following: \n1. Attend a Public Meeting and provide verbal and/or written comments during the Draft EIR Review Period. (See below for locations and dates of the meetings) \n2. Submit comments online until February 24\, 2020 at the following link: http://sidewalks.lacity.commentinput.com/. Please be sure to include your contact information. \n3. SUMMARY:Jewel Thais-Williams Square Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Please join Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson as he dedicates the intersection of Pico and Norton as “Jewel Thais-Williams Square.” \nThais-Williams will be only the second African-American woman and the first out Black lesbian to receive this honor in the history of the City of Los Angeles. \nThe official ceremony will take place in front of The Catch One Club followed by the unveiling of the Jewel Thais-Williams Square signs at the corner of Pico Blvd. and Norton Ave. \nA reception will follow in Jewel’s Room with special guest legendary Catch One deejay DJ KeyKey. \nRSVP to attend \nAbout Jewel Thais-Williams\nFor over four decades\, Jewel Thais-Williams helped change the course of our country by breaking down racial\, social\, and cultural barriers. One of the original safe spaces for the Black LGBT community\, The Catch also served as a refuge for many during the AIDS crisis. As Thais-Williams’ club grew to become known as the “unofficial Studio 54 of the West Coast\,” Jewel became a national role model for how to fight discrimination and serve the less fortunate. \nThais-Williams graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in History\, and during her college years\, she wanted to be self-employed. Her first business was a boutique\, but it went out of business\, so she bought a bar. She opened the club after she experienced discrimination in different clubs around West Hollywood\, because she was Black and female. Women at the time were not allowed to tend bar\, but Jewel saved enough money and bought the bar despite the limitations. When the club opened\, it became a hub for a diverse population of performers\, including Sylvester\, Whitney Houston\, Luther Vandross\, Janet Jackson\, Donna Summer\, Whoopi Goldberg\, Rick James\, and Madonna. \nWhile she was still the owner of the nightclub\, Jewel went back to school and got her Master of Science degree in Oriental Medicine from Samra University in 1998. Due to the high rate of preventable diseases\, such as diabetes and obesity\, in minority populations\, Jewel decided to open a non-profit called the Village Health Foundation next door to The Catch. It was created with the purpose of educating lower-income communities on nutrition and living a more healthy lifestyle and continues to serve the community. \nAs profiled by journalist Karen Ocamb\, “Thais-Williams became a mother figure to many\, helping her ‘kids’ get clean and sober and providing comfort to Black gay men rejected by their families and church during the AIDS crisis. But Thais-Williams took the extra step\, co-founding the Minority AIDS Project and the Imani Unidos Food Pantry in South L.A. and joining the Board of AIDS Project Los Angeles to bring their HIV/AIDS services ‘down to the hood.’” \nOcamb continued\, “additionally\, with her wife Rue\, Thais-Williams founded Rue’s House\, the nation’s first housing facility for women with AIDS and their children\, most of whom were poor and Black.” Thais-Williams funded Rue’s house from revenue made at The Catch. A number of the women living with AIDS staying at Rue’s House publicly raised the issue of what would happen to their children after they died. After the women gained access to life-saving HIV medications\, Rue’s House transition into a sober living facility. \nAfter nearly closing in 2015\, it was purchased by Mitch Edelson and reopened under new management. Briefly called The Union after the change in management\, it has since reverted to the Catch One moniker. \nEvent article in WEHO Daily
